Throughout nature there are “shiny spots”, ranging in size, that change those who touch them. The powers they give you are unique to the individual and often take on some aspect of the landscape they appear in, and once they are used up they disappear.

Alina is pushed into one of these spots by a jealous rival and becomes “shiny”. The spot was at the bottom of a steep cliff, just where the surf meets the rock, and she becomes a mermaid of legend.
