Breaking Through Embarassment

Breaking Through Embarrassment

There’s something distinctly embarrassing about self-promotion. I’m sure it’s tied up in societal ideals about being humble, or how in high school everyone pounces on anyone who shows any sign of being too confident in themselves. Whatever the cause, I have the hardest time talking about accomplishments. If you were to ask me on any given day what I’ve done that I’m proud of, I’d probably say something about how I actually got up on time that morning, or that I’d done particularly good work that day at my day job. Talking about my writing is something that I’ve felt very uncomfortable doing for a very long time, and I’m only now beginning to overcome that.

After all, who will want to read your book if you aren’t willing to talk about it?

I reached a point where I suddenly was certain that I wanted to publish—I wasn’t willing to wait any longer. I made my Instagram (@l.a.garnett.author , if you’re interested) and started doing my thing, and I hopped onto Threads and found a larger following. It’s easier to be text-based, when you’re not used to being perceived by so many strangers. Being surrounded, digitally, by so many like-minded creators has been immensely inspiring.

I also joined a writing group that meets in person, and it has been life-changing. I cannot recommend—finding a group that you are comfortable in, that gives you quality feedback on your writing, will inspire you like you wouldn’t believe. I’m deeply grateful that I took a leap and decided to go that first night, and that I have kept going week after week.

So, if you’re struggling to put yourself out there—I suppose my advice is simple. Embarrassment is fleeting. The benefits of just trying something out and seeing how it goes far outweigh any negatives, and you may just find the perfect group to keep you on your A-game.

When we are fiddling around in our drafts, eternally toying with grammar and changing character names, we are writing. We truly become writers when we take that leap and allow others to read our work.

The Spiraling, my debut book, is out now! Check it out on Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or wherever you buy books online. I’m so excited for this book to be out in the world, and I can’t wait for you to read it.
