While I’m working on the sequel to The Spiraling, I like to jump from project to project. It keeps things fresh and it allows me to try new things and perspectives, which I’ve found reduces writer’s block. One such project is a romance novel that I’ve called Full Steam Ahead (I suppose this is a title reveal, woohoo!) and I’m hoping to release it this winter!
This piece is wildly different from The Spiraling—different universe, a whole new cast of characters, and I’ve written it in first person single POV. Switching between different perspectives is a great opportunity for longer stories, but sometimes I just want to live in one character’s head.
The general gist is that Lena is the eldest in her household and after the deaths of their parents she has been responsible for her and her siblings’ well-being for the last fifteen years. They are entirely reliant on their great-uncle for financial support and after his death, Lena must travel to the capital to secure their portion of his estate. On the train she meets an intriguing and attractive man, Julian—and there may be more to him than there seems.

For this book I’m going for a romantic, cool, and almost Victorian vibe—most of the book is set on a long-distance train, and I love the locked-in nature of a single setting. I think simplifying the setting allows an author to focus on the characters at hand; I personally find it to be most effect in horror and romance. It’s interesting that two seemingly opposing genres can be so similar—I’m sure I’ll explore that in a future project!
I don’t know that I’ll ever write a book that doesn’t have some sort of magical, paranormal, or supernatural element to it, so you can expect that from Full Steam Ahead as well!
Keep an eye out for future updates and an upcoming release date! Full Steam Ahead is currently on its third draft, so I’m hoping that it is close to being done and ready to share with you all!
