Just Keep Writing: My Philosophy

It’s pretty simple, isn’t it? In my mind, and from what I’ve read and heard from dozens of authors, the only way to truly improve your craft is to keep trucking along until you feel you’ve done it. The only problem? You’ll probably never feel that way. That’s the tough part about art. Once you’re an expert, you know about all the things you can do better and that means you’ll always be striving for the next thing.

You can look at this negatively, but I choose to frame it as a positive. Rather than constantly comparing myself to others, I know that my personal writing journey will never be done. I will always be improving, always be learning, and that’s inspiring to me. I like knowing that I am not stagnant. As my life changes, so will I. Each work will be a snapshot in time – who I was as an author, a friend, a daughter, a wife, and a mother. I can choose to make each work better than the last.

One of my current goals is to write 1000 words, twice a day. Morning and night – not including this blog or any of the world-building I do when the inspiration strikes. These have to be words in a story, one of the many WIPs I currently have going, in order to count. It’s been a few days and I’ve maintained it so far. Let’s see if this daily practice can help me improve my craft.
