As far as jumping into the fray goes, I think starting a blog in your own name on today’s internet is one of the biggest leaps a person can take. I’ve never been much for social media – I wasn’t in the Myspace or the Tumblr scenes and my captions and hashtags on Instagram have never quite been snappy enough to get much attention. Long-form writing has always had my heart and I’ve tried my hand at it a few times over the years.
Once, in high school, I started a baking blog for English class. We were discussing the hero’s journey and each had to embark on a journey of our own and give a presentation at the end of the semester. Baking became my passion for the year and followed some other big-name blog recipes and took my own photos and put it all out there on the internet for “the world” to see. I don’t think it ever really got any traction but, then again, I didn’t really want it to either. The idea of running a food blog never really captured my imagination the way writing itself did. Baking cakes and cookies was a hobby – writing was a fascination.
Here’s to old passions and new beginnings, and putting yourself out there. For real, this time.
